Advertising overload is killing your website

Dale Haskell · 26 · Last reply by John Herald

You are destroying your website, which has been drowned in a sea of intrusive and annoying advertising. Allmusic used to be my favourite music website, and I used it for many years for teaching and research.

Now, I'd rather use Wikipedia, which has more comprehensive information without the advertising overkill. Your website is dying, and only the website managers can save it. Limit advertising, update information, or your supporters will abandon you.

    The web page jumps around

Mark Terrell · 1 · Last reply by Mark Terrell

The web page jumps around, presumably when you display adverts. The site is becoming unreadable and I am visiting less and less often. This is on wndos PC, windows lap top, macbook and android phone using chrome and opera.

Or find a way to display ads of a certain size so the page doesn't have to continually adjust.

    Site has become unusable

Pete Tiernan · 6 · Last reply by Zac

I’m a 20+ year user of this site. Your desire to induce people to sign up for memberships is killing what was once the best musical resource on the internet. Now, it’s literally unusable, with ads covering content. It’s sad. I’ve loved Steve Erlewine’s work. I’m sure this doesn’t make him happy.

    Mariah Carey Concern

Richard · 17 · Last reply by Richard

Hello, I have noticed a glaring issue with the discography for Mariah Carey. Other female artists (Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Lil’ Kim, TLC, Aaliyah, Mary J. Blige, Madonna, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Donna Summer, Britney Spears - compilation, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, etc.) have appropriately had album scores updated to five stars to reflect their respective classic albums, but this has not been done for Carey despite her level of influence and her insanely high-quality discography. It seems inexplicable that albums like Butterfly, Emancipation of Mimi, Daydream, Greatest Hits have not been updated to five stars to reflect their quality, influence, and

Stop operating dishonestly, either just have a pay wall, or offer a sincere free basic tier

Idle Primate · 6 · Last reply by Tony

I don't think there is anything intrinsically wrong with tiers of service. Quite the opposite, it is a way of making things economical for people.  Having a free tier and a paid tier is also fair, and clever.  You hook your customer, they love using the site, and eventually want more features unlocked.  You should do that, or just offer a paid service.  What you do right now is cruel and insulting.  I see sites and apps where you can use for free with advertising, or pay and have a cleaner experience, or with less delays.  Sometimes sites get greedy:

A spammy reviewer is actively making your site worse

Mouse · 6 · Last reply by Billylugosi

TL;DR: A certain AllMusic user's spammy reviews (41200+ reviews in <4 years) have made AllMusic a less useful, more hostile place to visit. This post requests that some sort of mitigating action be taken.

(Feel free to reach out if you want the specific username, but I'm sure you're already aware of this person. Hint: they review a lot of metal acts.)

    ---

A certain AllMusic user has posted over 41200 reviews since November 9, 2019—that is, nearly 30 reviews a day for 3.8 years. With few exceptions, the reviews are content-free and negative/dismissive. Almost none of them demonstrate even

    2023 Album Reviews Request

Matski · 21 · Last reply by tv

Can you forward a request to the editorial team? It's a small list of recent albums to be considered for review. These artists have all had at least one of their previous albums reviewed by AllMusic and their new album seems to be quite popular amongst users:

    • Iris DeMent - Workin' on a World
    • The Murder Capital - Gigi's Recovery
    • Ryuichi Sakamoto - 12
    • Sunny War - Anarchist Gospel

In addition, could you find out if their are plans to review these two albums? Both have already been released digitally, though the AllMusic website notes that they are still awaiting

add title filter to Advanced Search

rootsmusic · 5 · Last reply by rootsmusic

Like the artist filter, please add a title filter to Advanced Search.  If I can filter by title, then I can sort niche albums.  For example, I want to sort the highest rated "unplugged" title or "tribute" titles.

It is disappointing to see that All Music engages in censorship

Cargocoffee · 3 · Last reply by Murray Winship

It is disappointing to see that All Music engages in censorship.

In response to the review of Ryan Adams new album in which the reviewer didn't actually discuss the merits of the record but instead focused on the controversy surrounding the artist, I wrote the following:

”Well, that is an embarrassing non-review by All Music. I get it: Ryan Adams is a creep. But you know what? Many if not most artists are creeps. Is All Music going to go back and down review records put out by Jerry Lee Lewis? Led Zepplin? Phil Spector?

include artist's styles in Advanced Search

Since some (especially older) albums are missing metadata for styles, please include the artist's styles when filtering in Advanced Search.

    Missing Entries Request Thread

Matski · 18 · Last reply by Matski

Can we use this forum as a place to request new discography entries? I've noticed a handful of recent albums that seem to have missed AllMusic's radar. It may be because they haven't been physical released yet though they have all been made available digitally. Users who have already had a chance to listen to these albums may also appreciate being able to rate them. Here are the missing albums:

Boris - 'No' [Sources - Official Site | Bandcamp] Chloe x Halle - 'Ungodly Hour' [Sources - Official Store | Soundcloud] Nicolas Jaar - 'Telas' [Sources - Official Site |

    2010s Album Review Request

Matski · 4 · Last reply by tv

Would anyone be willing to forward on another request? A few months ago, it was mentioned in a thread (see the Billie Eilish request) that the editorial team may consider review requests for albums with a large number of ratings and user reviews, regardless of their release date. Big Mistake! I've been slowly compiling a list of albums from the last decade that were never reviewed. Nearly all of them have over 100 user ratings and most have at least a couple of user reviews:

    • Agnes Obel - Aventine
    • Brockhampton - Saturation
    • Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap
    • Charli XCX

    Album Ratings and Admin Errors

anonymized · 2 · Last reply by anonymized

There's something I want to ask about your ratings. When an artist's album pick (the suggested entry point) differs from being their most highly-rated, editors usually provide criticisms in the review that explain why the album pick release hasn't received a higher rating. See Erykah Badu or Lou Reed.

Lately, I've noticed that there are occasions where criticisms weren't given to explain the choice. It has led me to wonder if errors were made instead. There are two very different acts that I wanted to highlight this with.

The first is the late Nanci Griffith. Once in a Very Blue

Long Pauses on accessing discography page

Joshua Buergel · 3 · Last reply by Joshua Buergel

    Hello,

I'm observing long pauses on loading band pages and discography pages. I'm a subscriber (have been for years), so it doesn't seem to be ad related. I took some network traces, and it seems to be samples.json that is taking a while to load. On three pages I loaded (the pages for Kool & the Gang, Big Black, and the Melvins, and yes, that's quite a trio), samples.json took about 4 seconds to load twice, and then 19s. I've attached screen shots of the network traces here.

    Aggressive pop-up ads ruining experience

MichaelH · 1 · Last reply by Zac

Ads that blink and block content keep popping up and I can't make them go away. Aggressive ads are killing an otherwise very good side and I don't think I'll keep coming back until ads are kept at a decent level (to the side, non-blinking). They really bug the heck out of me and almost make me panic in my unsuccessful attempts to make them go away. I can't focus on the site with them there and then there's no point in my coming back is there.
