Biography entry for Jim Scott, mixer of many top LPs and more.

    Fritz · 0 · Posted

I was talking with a friend about the McCartney Hulu show with Rick Rubin.

Rick Rubin is credited with co-mixing Car Wheels by Lucinda .

But one of the best mixers ever, Jim Scott was the real mixer. It's well past time that Jim Scott had a bio on his listing. IMHO, RR is a nobody compared to the accomplishments of Jim Scott.

I'd say RR was there to observe Jim Scotts talent at the bequest of some muckety muck at Mercury that RR bn'd. Here, lemme get you started.  https://www.plyrzstudios.com/

Would be nice to filter by calendar by genre

Jonathan Hyde · 1 · Last reply by Zac

Used to use this site all the time. It's been years since I logged in since a lot of sites offer similar functionality now. Was really hoping the calendar had a filter by genre option. It doesn't so it'll probably be years till I login again but would definitely use that feature if it were an option.

    reviews missing ratings

    rootsmusic · 0 · Posted

To discover albums, I often use ratings to filter.  Occasionally, editors review an album and neglect rating it.  Lacking ratings, these reviews can't attract views from more users.  Since your business model relies on increasing views, you should try to identify which reviews still need ratings. In recent days, I've been binging on Nanci Griffith after her surprisingly premature death.  If I hadn't been dwelling on her discography, I couldn't have discovered her remix compilation.  It has a full review but is missing a rating.  Although the review would not have been highly rated, the rarity of a folk remix still

    collaboration recording type

rootsmusic · 1 · Last reply by Zac

I usually find collaboration records to be interesting.  So I'm suggesting collaborations as a Recording Type.  If the Recording Type doesn't already exist, then collaborations can be identified when credits include more than one Primary Artist.  Thanks.

add "tributee" to credits for tribute albums

rootsmusic · 1 · Last reply by rootsmusic

Allmusic doesn't have a Recording Type for tribute albums, which are entire albums that are dedicated to another artist.  Even though they may be officially named in the liner notes as only a composer, I suggest adding the tributee role in the album's credits.  Doing so would be a workaround when searching for tribute albums.  Thanks.

Primary Artist on various artist albums that aren't compilations

    rootsmusic · 0 · Posted

In Meat Loaf's credits, I can filter for "Primary Artist".  Among the Primary Artist's credits in the Various Artist recording type, I'd like a way to differentiate between recording types Main Albums and Compilations.  (Main Albums are original recordings, and Compilations compile previously released recordings.)  If I can do so, then I can more easily find Meat Loaf's original recordings on Main Albums not under his discography (for example, The Inter Galactic Touring Band).

How about finally doing a complete entry on Mike Gibbs? The simplest way of doing this would be to combine your entries on "Mike Gibbs" and "Michael Gibbs," because they are the same person. After that correction, there could be decent entries on at least

Paul Weideman · 1 · Last reply by Zac

Jazz in Britain recently released Mike Gibbs, Revisiting Tanglewood 63: The Early Tapes. It's a reminder of the significance of Gibbs, especially of his coming of age in the Sixties cauldron along with John Dankworth, Graham Collier, Sadao Watanabe, Gabor Szabo, Gary Burton, and Duško Gojković. Admittedly, this is about jazz — yes, lower on the financial totem pole than pop and hip hop and rock — and, admittedly, it's about British jazz. But still!

    Archival featured new releases

    joe s · 2 · Last reply by joe s

Please consider including more archival releases among your Features New Release each week. It seems like so far in 2022 there haven't been many covered as in 2021 and before. Are there simply not as many this year worth mentioning or reviewing?

JC and I were friends in San Francisco when we lived in the same apartment building on Fillmore St. I have some cassette tapes that I recorded of him talking about his life.  I am trying to find somewhere to donate these to so that they can be preserved. Do you have any suggestions for a place that would want them?

willing to have fewer bios for more reviews

rootsmusic · 1 · Last reply by rootsmusic

I've praised Allmusic's bios when my expectations have been surpassed.  But frankly, most bios are like encyclopedic overviews that copy info from the discography into narrative form.  Rarely do bios go deeper by including a critical perspective of the artist's career development within the historical context of popular music.

So to me, the most valuable sections of a bio are its "member of" and "collaborated with" sections because these sections help me to explore the artist's other projects.  As long as these sections are kept updated, then I'd be willing to not expect that the narrative bio be updated or

lowly-rated albums don't deserve full reviews

    rootsmusic · 0 · Posted

I'm suggesting time-management for your editors to review more deserving albums.  They shouldn't write full reviews for one-star ratings.  Rate one-star and skip the review!  I don't expect reviews for albums that were rated below 3-stars, which I doubt many users would read.

UFO’s live album Stranger in the night

    Arthur Laurey · 0 · Posted

Since several YouTube blogs rank this album in AllTime Top 10 Live (Hard) Rock albums, as a standard procedure I checked AllMusic. To my surprise AllMusic doesn’t mention this album in the pretty long UFO Biography, on the other hand the AllMusic Critics Review starts with ‘Often overlooked live album’. Therefore my sugquestion is to mention and probably praise this album in the UFO Biography. You’re welcome & thank you.

Can you remove the thumbs down on the reviews? It hurts feelings or make it optional and for some you can disable?
