Limit reviews, sure, and 3000 characters is not enough

You want people to share honest, thorough perspectives and opinions about records. To do this, you need to give us space to do it. I'm 3000 characters is insufficient here, and I ask you to please consider extending the length of reviews. If you want to be a destination for people to learn, be inspired, and buy, this is a way to do that.

expand characters of user reviews to at least 5000

the fact that 3000 is the maximum is pretty outdated considering the limitless amount of storage data, and also unfair given that writers for the site can take a far more vast amount. allmusic is also for the users, who like to share their opinions and points of view on their favorite music.

Does Allmusic know that it's in the digital age now, where cloud storage is limitless?  Character limits remind me of 7" vinyl constraining the length of a single song!  If Allmusic needs to have a character limit, then surely the limit can't be the same regardless of reviewing a single song or a multi-disc boxset.

Hi Zac.

Thank you for replying.

There's a difference in terms of what a known musician or a known album needs and what a newer artist requires. I'd like to post the first review of “José James: New York 2020" on the site, and as hard as I try, I cannot get my review to fit the permitted characters.

And, honestly, I don't think I should have to do that (it's 3600 characters with spaces) because I'm not writing it for me. I'm writing for the audience, for José (as a fan, not an employee, of course), and for musicians on the come up who have the courage and energy and fire to - in today's market where social media all but controls what we hear musically - make and release their music.

Again, thank you. And 4000 characters isn't much more than you currently permit. Please consider. Stay safe.

Hi Kate,
Thanks for the feedback.

We thought quite a bit about the best length for user reviews and in our research we felt that 3,000 characters was kind of a sweet spot to allow users to be lengthy in their evaluations but also require them to be focused on the music at hand.

Below is an example of a review at right around 2,900 characters and as you can see it does allow for quite a bit of room for thoughtful critique without becoming a dissertation.
