2024 Album Reviews Request

Opening this new question for people to request notable albums released this year that they feel merit a review, just to help AllMusic keep track - the final decision will of course be up the editors, whom I'd like to thank in advance for their generally excellent reviews and much-appreciated efforts to keep up!

Can anyone say whether there are any plans to review the new albums by Linkin Park, Marilyn Manson or Poppy?

In all honesty, the editor who will give these titles the best assessment is out on paternity leave so my guess is some/all of them will be reviewed when he is back in the office.

C

It did seem strange that those acts hadn't received a review. With any luck, your editor will find a bit of time to catch up with what he's missing.

Congrats to Neil and his family. ;)

Huh. Perhaps that was an incorrect guess. Because said editor has just uploaded a new review for that very Linkin Park album!

@Matski: Neil is just a very dedicated multitasker.

With all the numerous requests already present in the this thread, you'll have to excuse me for adding to them. But considering that AllMusic's editorial team are likely gearing up to release their 'End of Year' list for this year, I wanted to make some last-minute suggestions in the hope that they might get reviewed.

With one exception, these suggestions are all for artists who've had their previous albums reviewed by staff. Since release, they've garnering double-digits in users ratings and a few users reviews too. As a bonus, reception from critics and fans has generally been positive:

The one exception mentioned is the album by Cindy Lee. Lee is the alias of Patrick Flegel,
formerly of the band Women. When this album was released earlier in the year, it was done so out-of-the-blue and it only received a few professional reviews. But the combination of its unconventional release and its wonderful collection of songs did garner it growing attention, to the point where it's already being name-checked high up in mid-decade lists, by notable publications [links:1, 2]. It's currently only available online [links: Bandcamp | Youtube] although its physical release was recently announced for early next year. It would be fantastic if one of your writers would review it before the year was out. If not, maybe there will be time for it next year.

Edit: This request also assumes that reviews for the new albums that were released last Friday by Michael Kiwanuka, Father John Misty and of course, Kendrick Lamar are already in the works and do not need mentioning!

Is there any chance that you will review the new albums by Claire Rousey and Rachel Chinouriri? Both are gorgeous listens and are worth writing about.

In the realm of adventurous electronics, I hope someone will still find a moment for Body Meat's 'Starchris', Colin Stetson's 'The Love It Took to Leave You', Holy Tongue & Shackleton's 'The Tumbling Physic Joy of Now' and Kali Malone's 'All Life Long'. And in the heavy music department: Big Brave's 'A Chaos of Flowers', Envy's 'Eunoia' and Thou's 'Umbilical'. Some of these are by artists that have received glowing reviews before, others I think are likely to appeal to some of the same editors if they'd only find a moment to give them a spin. :)

Seems a review for that Thou record was already in the can. It is now available. Wonder if any of the other requests are in the works...

T

I hope someone will still find a moment for 'Self Hell' by While She Sleeps, a band that appears to be eyeing the mainstream.

T

In jazz, I hope someone will still find a moment for the new albums by Marquis Hill and Michael Mayo.

T

I hope someone will still find a moment for the new album by My Brightest Diamond, whose previous efforts have always been reviewed.

T

I hope someone will still find a moment for Willow Smith's 'Empathogen'. Her previous album was highly rated on AllMusic.

Maybe my last request was too much of a niche choice. With any luck, these two records will have more broad appeal. Enough for your reviewers to be interested in writing about them!

First, I'd like to ask for you to write a review for the Japandroids album - "Fate & Alcohol". According to the duo, it will be their last album! Would you be happy to give them a send-off?

Another album I've been eager to read a review on is "The New Sound" by Geordie Greep. The former frontman for Black Midi has come out swinging with his solo debut, confounding his critics. I expect that AllMusic could get to grips with it easily, if you can be persuaded to review it...

T

I hope someone will still find a moment for 'Bamaka Chicago' by the consistently highly rated Nicole Mitchell and Malinese kora master Ballaké Sissoko.

C

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but as the review for Brat and It's Completely Different... was made available so quickly after it was requested, maybe you'll willing to go the distance and complete the set? Please could Heather also review Pop 2? It's the last album in Charli's discography that hasn't been reviewed. It's also one of Charli's best!

And on the off-chance that you don't like it, you can always review her ground-breaking Vroom Vroom EP instead.

Thank you!

I hope someone will still find a moment for the recently released DJ-Kicks mix by Honey Dijon and 'Fabric Presents Rødhåd'.

After the line-up drop of the influential Primavera Festival in Barcelona, I hope someone will still find a moment for some of the following releases from this year:

Been Stellar - Scream from New York, NY

Christian Lee Hutson - Paradise Pop. 10

Frost Children - Hearth Room

Glass Beams - Mahal

High Vis - Guided Tour

Julie - My Anti-Aircraft Friend

Los Campesinos - All Hell!

Machine Girl - MG Ultra

Still House Plants - If I Don't Make It, I Love U

The Dare - What's Wrong with New York?

This Is Lorelei - Box for Buddy, Box for Star

Tramhaus - The First Exit

Quite a few recommendations this week! Was going to mention the Los Campesinos album myself, at some point in the near future.

Los Campesinos usually get a reviewed upon release, with all six of their previous albums (and a couple of their EPs) having been covered. So it's surprising that it hasn't already been reviewed. Maybe their usual reviewer is a bit burned-out on them, given the underwhelming reception of their more recent releases received.

Would assure him that this new album is possibly the best thing they've done since 2008. Sure, they're no longer the energetic kids that made the wonderful Hold on Now, Youngster but this new project demonstrates a newfound confidence in a different way. And many music critics from other publications seemed to agree, given how well-received it was, earlier this year.

Shout-outs too to that Still House Plants record that you and Chris have been mentioning. Listened to that recently - pretty good stuff.

T

Somewhat of the beaten path, but very worthwhile: I hope someone will still find a moment for Tashi Wada's 'What Is Not Strange?', Discovery Zone's  'Quantum Web', Patrick Shiroishi's 'Glass House', Lord Spikeheart's 'The Adept', Still House Plants' 'If I Don't Make It, I Love U', Rafael Anton Irisarri & Abul Mogard's 'Impossibly Distant, Impossibly Close', Sex Swing's 'Golden Triangle', Kevin Richard Martin & KMRU's 'Disconnect', Erika Angell's 'The Obsession with Her Voice', Mabe Fratti's 'Sentir Que No Sabes', Sheherazaad's 'Qasr', Tropical Fuck Storm's 'Inflatable Graveyard', Zsela's 'Big for You' and FYEAR's debut album.

C

Yes! 'If I Don't Make It, I Love U' is a great album. Happy you've named it, tv. Would love to read what AllMusic have to say about it.

And thank you for naming 'Sentir Que No Sabes' too. It's another album I've been listening to on-loop. Mabe Fratti's albums are consistently great. If only a writer at AllMusic had the chance to listen to her work.

I would also like to recommend 'For Your Consideration' by Empress Of, for a review. She keeps on getting better with each album. AllMusic seemed to like her last three albums. Maybe with this one they will fall in love with her.

I would also like to know if there are plans to to review the new remix of 'Brat' by Charli XCX. These new takes on her songs from 'Brat' are remarkable and prove just how much of a creative talent she is.

T

I hope someone will still find a moment for the great dub master Scientist's new album.

Do you accept requests for reviews on organ-based drone music? You likely don't get that many but if one of your writer is up to the challenge of listening to Kali Malone's newest album, "All Life Long", or any of her previous works, it would make for an interesting read.

Yes please!

T

I hope someone will still find a moment for Doechii's debut album 'Alligator Bites Never Heal'.

A review for this one dropped this week. Feel free to check it out if you haven't already.

Ooh nice one.

T

Hope someone will still find a moment for Manu Chao's new album.

T

I hope someone will find a moment for the new BadBadNotGood record, which was announced for next month but has already been released online.

Chalk up another belated review request that has been fulfilled - you'll now find a review for this one.

T

Yay!

T

I hope someone will still find a moment for the new Miranda Lambert album. Her previous albums have all received glowing reviews (be it from Stephen Thomas Erlewine, who has unfortunately been fired.)

It seems Marcy has taken up the task of covering Miranda Lambert's new releases. A review for this album is now online.

Cheers!

I hope someone will still find a moment for this new album by Arve Henriksen and Harmen Fraanje. Their earlier albums have often been very favorably reviewed.

T

Hope someone will still find a moment for the new album by Fred Again.. He's been headlining festivals all over Europe this summer, but AllMusic doesn't really seem to be on board yet. :)

Dunno if this one was already in the works or if it's in response to your request but a review for this Fred again.. album is now up for online.

T

In the works, I guess. :) Cheers!

C

Your reviewers do a great job. If you are accepting requests for reviews here, there are some names I'd like to mention. Could they review for the new albums by Everything Everything and Still House Plants? I'd also like to add support to the requests already given for reviews on the new albums by Arab Strap and Sprints.

T

I hope someone will still find a moment for The Dare's debut 'What's Wrong with New York?'

T

I hope someone will still find a moment for Surya Botofasina's excellent 'Subtle Movements'.
