Long Pauses on accessing discography page

Hello,

I'm observing long pauses on loading band pages and discography pages. I'm a subscriber (have been for years), so it doesn't seem to be ad related. I took some network traces, and it seems to be samples.json that is taking a while to load. On three pages I loaded (the pages for Kool & the Gang, Big Black, and the Melvins, and yes, that's quite a trio), samples.json took about 4 seconds to load twice, and then 19s. I've attached screen shots of the network traces here.

Hey Joshua,

You alerted us to a function that was pointing to an old service (the one that figures out which samples to offer for play at the top of the page) that intermittently slows down. I didn't realize we were still using that call.

We'll update the way we build that page and the issue should be resolved. Thanks for the detail. Much appreciated.

Fantastic, glad I could help. I write a music blog and verify discography details on AllMusic all the time, it'll be great not to deal with the pauses.

Perfect, thanks.

Last question(s): Does the content on the page load and you can interact with albums (click, sort, etc) but you can still see that the page is loading something?

Or is there no content on the page at all for those four (or 19) seconds?

JB

It's partially loaded, but I cannot interact with it. For example, during the 19s pause, the list of Melvins albums had loaded with no album art, but the entire page was frozen, and I couldn't interact with it until it finished loading.

I just tried to get a screenshot of what the partially loaded page looked like, and for whatever it's worth, it doesn't seem to be happening while I'm dialed in through the company's VPN.

This level of detail is super helpful.

Can you also tell us where you are located?

JB

Seattle area, using Comcast gigabit for my ISP.

But, for what it's worth, I had observed similar behavior when I was in a different house using Century Link.
