The primary change you'll see is that the ways to navigate within pages has changed (or rather changed back, in some ways). Now you can jump to the artist's discography, credits, awards or other information by using the links that are pinned to the side of the screen. Additionally, the information for an artist or an album can all be displayed on one long page (as opposed to jumping through multiple pages). Hopefully this feels a little bit "Web 1.0" but in a positive way.

The new layout uses slightly larger font and spacing for improved readability, and to help users on mobile devices click links and buttons more cleanly. The page is wider to allow us to place ads in a less obtrusive way and to avoid overlapping page content wherever possible. Ads are nobody's favorite topic but they are a requirement to keep the site up and running. The additional site width also allows for more information to be displayed and sorted, so things like average user ratings can appear in more places.

Some additional cool features include: A stand-alone page for an archive of daily Staff Picks.

We've done rigorous testing and QA on multiple browsers and devices, but bugs always pop up in situations like this.

It was a huge undertaking to rip the music clips from physical and digital sources, and then to host and deliver those clips (in multiple formats). They've determined that while the feature was appreciated, they could no longer support the business case of providing it as a product.

We understand that this was an important part of exploring and discovering music on the site and we're investigating other partnerships to try to bring the sound clips or streaming options back.

One of the things that has always been a challenge when dealing with a database of tens of millions of tracks is the best way to present that information.

In the past we've been displaying "Track-based" information (a Track being defined as an instance of a song as recorded and indexed on each individual recorded release). The track "Wonderwall" as written by Noel Gallagher and performed by Oasis released as the third track on (What's the Story) Morning Glory CD in 1995, and a separate instance of the track "Wonderwall" as written by Noel Gallagher and performed by Oasis released as the third track on (What's the Story) Morning Glory LP in 2014, and another track listing "Wonderwall" as written by Noel Gallagher and performed by Oasis released as the second track on disc 2 of the Now That's What I Call Music 34! CD in 1996. These are all considered to be individual "tracks" in our way of cataloging music. Even though each of those performances and recordings are identical, they were kept in different silos and grouped together loosely on the site.

For the past several months, we've been working on creating what we call "Song" entities (the text of the track title combined with the name(s) of the songwriters) and what we call "Performance" entities (grouping together instances of the "Song" when performed by the same artist). This is all based on the data that we have available to us, so it is a system in progress. We keep finding outliers and inconsistencies that need to be merged and cleaned up, but we're happy with the results so far.

This allows us to do some pretty fun things:

Overview:

The overview tab looks similar to what has existed on the AllMusic song page. The composer(s), a song review (where available), appearances of the performance on different albums.

 


Variations:

Here we've pulled out different versions of the same song by that artist. Live versions, remixes, edits, alternate versions, outtakes, re-recordings and a handful of other types are identified and highlighted in this area. 

 


Also Performed By:

This tab contains other performances of that same song, and the number of times those performances appear on different albums. This can be thought of as "Cover" versions of the song (the "Song" being the track text + songwriters).

 


Attributes:

For years we've wanted to give the music fans the ability to profile and categorize their favorite songs. Adding appropriate genres, styles, moods and themes to whichever song they'd like. Simply click where it says "Add Styles" in the left sidebar of any song page. If a song has no attributes it'll say "We currently don't have any genres associated with this song. Would you like to contribute?" 

 


Through this interface users can tag a genre, up two three styles, up to three moods, and up to three themes on each performance. The most popular attributes for each are listed in order of the number of times they've been assigned. Users can pick from this list of previously-assigned descriptors, or select new ones from the category trees (or by typing in the filter area) on the left. 

 

None of this was possible before we had the concept of a Song entity and a Performance entity but now we can capture this data at the base level. Once we have more information from the music fans of the world about the sound and feel of these songs, we'll be working on building new cool lists ranking and categorizing songs for different moods, activities, and whatever else we can come up with.

Again, our method of combining tracks together to determine "Songs" and "Performances" is all based on the data that we have available to us, so it is a system in progress. We keep finding outliers and inconsistencies that need to be merged and cleaned up, but we're happy with the results so far. Let us know what you think.

Many of our users have asked for more exact results in search and we've recently rolled out some functionality that enables exact string matches on AllMusic.

By putting your word or string in quotes, we try to find the exact match within search results, and from there you can refine further by filtering by artist, album, song, composition, label or article.

Searching for the term Rolling Stones finds thousands of results (some referencing just Rolling, some mentioning the word Stones):
 

but wrapping "Rolling Stones" in quotes, it only returns 44 results containing that exact term:


 


Also, you can search for "Artist Name"+"Album Title" or "Artist Name"+"Song Title" and refine your searches to ONLY those matches:

We’ve launched a new feature that lets you share your detailed insights and opinions on the albums you love. Now on AllMusic you can submit your own reviews on the albums that have changed your life, let people know what you think about a new release, or take down one of those sacred cows that you’ve always thought was overrated.


Reading and Writing Reviews
Now on album pages, you’ll see a tab that says User Reviews. From here, logged-in users can write, edit and submit their own reviews for display on AllMusic. Give us your insights, opinions and raves to help other AllMusic users find that hidden gem that needs the spotlight. The reviews must be between 50 and 3,000 characters in length. Because spam is horrible, we will not be allowing hyperlinks in these user-submitted reviews.


Show Your Reviews On Your AllMusic Profile
To create your AllMusic Profile so you can display all of your reviews in one place, simply navigate to the Profile Settings page in your user account and create your unique URL. If you’ve signed in with Facebook, your profile picture will show up automagically. You can write a bio for yourself or remain mysterious. You can see your profile page by clicking “My Profile” at the top of the page.


Sharing Your Reviews With The World
If you have a public profile on AllMusic, you can now publish your reviews on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or via email, simply by clicking the share icons by each review. If you are not seeing these links, make sure your profile is public by navigating to your Profile Settings page and making sure User Profile Visibility is set to “Public.”




Upvoting and Moderating the AllMusic Community
As a logged-in user, you have the ability to guide the AllMusic community toward the more helpful reviews. Each user review contains a Thumbs Up and a Thumbs Down icon, so that logged-in users can mark the reviews they find most helpful (or downgrade a review that doesn't add value to the site). Additionally, if a review is offensive, spammy, or otherwise inappropriate, clicking the "Report Inappropriate" link will notify us that the review might need moderation or removal.


Keeping Your Friends Connected With Your Favorite Music
As music fans, we know how hard it can be to clue other people into your music knowledge, which is why we're so excited to introduce this feature that makes it easier for you to share your opinions and recent discoveries.

We know how tough it is to keep up on when new albums get released. Local record shops are becoming an endangered species and many of us miss that feeling of walking in and having the clerk say "Oh hey, I know you like The Velvet Underground so I stashed this reissue behind the counter for you."

We wanted to enable our friends to keep track of the albums that come out each week by their favorite artists, so we built a way to be a bit more like that clerk behind the counter.  Maybe a little less surly and judgmental though...

Following Artists
Now on AllMusic, logged-in users can choose to "Follow" a band or musician on the artist page. Right under the artist name is a button allowing you to follow an artist. Selecting this will enable AllMusic to notify you when that artist releases something new.

Notifications
If an artist you are following releases a new album or single, AllMusic will let you know about it. A notification flag will light up at the top of the site allowing you to click through to the album pages, read the reviews, hear samples of the songs and really dig in.

We know better than anyone how hard it can be to keep up with new releases, which is why we're so excited to introduce this feature, and we hope it makes it easier for you to stay connected to your favorite artists. Basically, we think you're pretty cool, and you deserve cool things.

By popular request, we’ve launched a new feature on AllMusic that lets you share your custom lists of albums with your friends. By creating your user profile you can tell people what you’re listening to now or share your list of desert island discs with the world.

Your AllMusic Profile
To create your AllMusic User Profile so you can share your lists, simply navigate to the Profile Settings page in your user account and create your unique URL. If you’ve signed in with Facebook, your profile picture will show up automagically, and you can write a bio for yourself or remain mysterious. You can see your profile page by clicking on the gear icon at the top of the page and selecting “My Profile.”

Making Your Lists Public Or Keeping Them Private
Once you’ve created your user profile, your public lists will be displayed in alphabetical order. Have no fear, your lists are all private by default, but by toggling them to “Public” you’ll be able to let the world know your personal take on what’s worth listening to.

Sharing Your Lists With The World
Once a list is public, you can now send it to Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or via email, simply by clicking the share icons at the top of each list page. You can also see what your profile looks like to other people by selecting the “Public View” on your profile page.

We’re happy to announce that you can now keep track of your personal record collection on AllMusic. All of us are music fans and many of us are collectors, meticulously tracking which albums we own. Now on AllMusic you can add albums to your collection list by clicking "Add to My Collection" on any album page.

If you are a massive collector who scoffs at the idea of adding albums one at a time, you can also use our Collection Builder tool.

This page allows you to enter the name of up to three bands or musicians, and then quickly add the albums by that artist to your collection.

Your collection is available for you to browse and sort on both the AllMusic website and on your mobile device by going into your profile area. Sort your albums by year, artist name, album title or your own rating.

From here you can rate your albums using the same five-star rating system that our editors use, and these ratings power your album recommendations.

For a while now, AllMusic fans have been asking for a method to be able to sort and filter all of the different albums in our collection based on different criteria and requirements. We're proud to announce the AllMusic Advanced Album Search

You can get to Advanced Search at the top of each page.

Once there, you can use the filters on the left to select from the following characteristics:

• Genres - The broad overall classification of the music on the album.
• Styles - The more specific type of music on the album.
• Release Date (or re-issue date) - When the album came out.
• AllMusic Rating - 5 stars is great, 1 star...not so much. More info here.
• Recording Types - Filtering on Studio recordings? Live recordings? Looking for Various Artist compilations?
• Moods - Adjectives that describe the sound and feel of a song, album, or overall body of work.
• Themes - Activities or events particularly suited for a song, album or overall body of work.
• The Album’s Main Performer - The primary artist (or artists) associated with the album.

and begin to dig through the albums that represent those characteristics. By typing in the text box within the filters, you can quickly narrow down to the type of characteristic you’re looking for (for example, type "rock" into the genres & styles filter to see Pop/Rock, Acid Rock, Rockabilly, and many more).

Your active filters will appear at the top of the page. You can adjust your filters by clicking to remove them from the “Active Filters” list, by un-checking boxes in any of the individual modules on the left, or start over by clicking “Clear All” in the upper right.

Your results can also be sorted by Year, by Album Title and by AllMusic Rating by clicking on the text at the top of each column.

Trippy 5-Star Funk albums from the '70s? Disappointing 1-Star Hair Metal albums from the '80s? John Zorn's Live albums? Grateful Dead studio recordings? Filter Away!
